The War for My Attention: My Phone vs. My Plants

It's strange to think that on this journey to cultivate the wild, to turn a block of land into a forest. I’ve found myself glued to my phone screen. Don’t get me wrong, I love creating content and seeing other people’s projects. But I’d be lying if I said it never makes me feel a bit down.

Why? Maybe it’s because others seem to have better projects, more knowledge, or they’re creating the kind of content I wish I could. Still, I push on.

I push on for a dream. Social media sells the idea of a life free from eight-hour workdays a world where I can be home, creating forests and sharing my learnings. The grind continues. But am I chasing a false flag? More followers means more chance to live that dream... right?

Do I keep going? Do I keep pushing through the noise — the ads, the endless products targeted at my insecurities? Do I join the "enemy" to try to spread a message of returning to nature?

If I threw my phone away, would the loneliness kill me? Or would I become what I’ve always dreamed of — some druid of the natural world, with a connection that goes beyond just knowing the names of plants? A realm I can't reach through technology.

My plants don’t demand anything. They simply belong. In a world of chaos, they sit still. Calm.

I need to create boundaries.

So I’ve taken up something different: Proudfoot Post (my newsletter). This is my opportunity to connect with people on a deeper level — not through the borrowed platform of Instagram. I want to build a community that’s more than just videos and text. I want to meet everyday people with hands in the soil, creating good green projects that give me the courage to keep going — especially as we move into an AI world.

So, back to my plants...

🌱Ingredients

1 medium-large butternut pumkin(or any other variety of similar size)

1 medium size whole pumpkin

1 onion, chopped into big chunks

1 garlic bulb, top chopped off

1 sprig rosemary

1 sprig thyme

2 tbsp butter

2 cups of veggie stock + 2 cups of water

1/2 cup coconut cream or heavy cream

Bread, cut into thick slices

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F.

  2. Peel your pumpkin (or don’t I tend to leave the skin) and chop into equal-sized chunks.

  3. Set aside your serving pumpkin, cut top of pumpkin scrape seeds and a layer of pumpkin out to create bowl shape

  4. Drizzle with oil and roast for an hour

  5. In a baking tray, add the pumpkin chunks, onion, garlic, thyme and rosemary. Drizzle generously with olive oil and season with salt & pepper. Bake for 1 hour or until the veggies are soft and slightly browned.

  6. In a pot, melt the butter Add in the roasted veggies, stock and water.

  7. Transfer the soup into a blender, or you can also use a stick blender and blend until the soup is nice and smooth. Optional but you can add in 1/2 cup of heavy cream, mix well. Here you can adjust the consistency of your soup by adding more water if desired and season to taste.

  8. Let your extra pumpkin cool before pouring blended mix in.

  9. Toast some bread add butter. Garnish soup with a drizzle of heavy cream (I used coconut cream) ,olive oil and a dash of parsley
